The project “Empowering Future Technology Leaders from Korça," sponsored by Smile.al, is currently in its final sessions. The main focus has been the practical development of an application designed for elderly users, which is being built by the five participating students with our support and mentorship. These sessions have concentrated on transforming planned ideas and features into real, implemented functionalities, helping students connect the technical knowledge they previously acquired with solving concrete software development challenges.
Throughout the lessons, the students worked on important topics such as Firebase authentication, building login and signup screens, and managing user-specific data. Special attention was also given to code quality through project structure organization and refactoring, as well as the professional handling of loading and error states to improve the overall user experience.
In the following sessions, the focus shifted toward performance optimization and the visual finalization of the application. Students learned techniques for optimizing rendering and lists in React Native while also working on creating a more consistent and modern user interface enhanced with subtle animations. The final phase of these sessions included testing, bug fixing, and the deployment process of the application through Expo.
One of the most valuable moments of these weeks was the participation of our special guest, Isak Bego, who shared his experience as a computer science student at the American University in Bulgaria. He spoke about his internship and startup experiences, explaining the qualities that help students stand out in job applications and professional opportunities within the technology industry.
Additionally, Isak introduced students to how professional software development teams organize their work using Scrum methodology, user stories, and the process of transforming them into concrete technical tasks. Another key topic was the use of Git and GitHub for version control, where students gained firsthand insight into how large-scale projects professionally manage code and team collaboration.
